THE MEANING / threewis3monkeys
See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.
Three principles for what we take in and what we put into the world.
Mizaru covers his eyes: see no evil. For threewis3monkeys, this is a reminder to be mindful of what we give our attention to and to resist influences that encourage harm.
Kikazaru covers his ears: hear no evil. We take this as a choice to guard against harmful influences, refuse gossip and listen with care.
Iwazaru covers his mouth: speak no evil. Words carry responsibility. Choose honesty, kindness and restraint rather than spreading harm.
The name draws from the Japanese pictorial proverb of the three wise monkeys. The familiar image is associated with the seventeenth-century carving at Nikkō’s Tōshō-gū shrine. Its meaning has been interpreted differently across cultures.
threewis3monkeys takes its direction from the moral principle: self-control, care and avoiding harmful thoughts, words and actions. Our interpretation asks us to recognise wrongdoing and respond responsibly, rather than look away.
The clothes are a reminder to practise those values. The collection is being designed around the choices we make every day.
